- One of the first nanotechnologies to make it into products
- Carbon nanotubes are tubular carbon molecules a few nanometers in diameter and up to a meter in length.
- Capped with a half-fullerene dome (Buckeyball), they can either be Single-walled (SWNT) or multi-walled (MWNT)
- Defined by a two digit sequence
- First number indicates number of atoms around the tube
- Second digit determines the offset for each spiral
- The exhibit unusual strength and unique electrical properties
- ?(6,0), (6,6), (9.0), (9,9) are excellent conductors
- (7,0), (8,0), (6,2), (7,5) are excellent semiconductors
- Nanotubes self organize through van der Waals forces into bundles
- Can be formed by vapor deposition (even carbon arcs and candles)
- Possible applications include
